After the retirement of Patti Rizzo, athletic director Dan Radakovich needed to find a new head golf coach. He found her…in Gainesville. The University announced the hiring of Janice Olivencia as head golf coach and it will be fascinating to see how she handles her first shot at running a program. Olivencia has been at UF since 2012. First as an assistant coach, then as associate head coach since 2018.

A native of Puerto Rico, Olivencia spent her college years at the University of Texas where she was an All-American in 2002 and 2003. She was also a member of the Puerto Rico National Golf Team from 1998-2004 and she competed in the 2009 U.S. Women’s Open.

The Hurricanes golf team finished the season with a fifth place finish at the Tallahassee Regional, just missing out on a spot to the NCAA National Championship. Olivencia will have talent returning in returning junior Franziska Sliper who had 6 rounds of par or better in 2022 and returning sophomore Sara Byrne.

The Legend Staff is comprised of some of the hungriest young writers in South Florida. They are the cogs in the Legend engine that nobody knows. If you need to put a face to them, think minions with Canes tattoos. Unless thinking that is a copyright violation. In that case just think of them as worker ants. Easily removed with a magnifying glass if they get out of line.
