SOTG Fourplay: Southern Miss Golden Eagles

Welcome to a SOTG Fourplay edition where we do a quick preview of the next opponent. This week the Southern Miss Golden Eagles come to town and we will check under the hood. Like a good mechanic we need to know how things work. Frank Gore Jr. definitely works. The son of the Miami Hurricane legend was the bell cow.

Gore Jr. had 178 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 32 carries. Don’t be surprised to see the Golden Eagles go all Paul Johnson on you. Southern Miss shows a propensity to go all wing T with motioning B-Backs. Here you will see an example of it as Gore Jr. carries the ball through a very open B-gap bubble.

The Miami Hurricanes are definitely going to need to mind the gap this week and have a plan to stop the run. The Golden Eagles are a run first offense. They netted only 139 passing yards last week via the air. If, and big if, the Miami Hurricanes can force the Golden Eagles to pass, good things will happen. Golden Eagle quarterback Ty Keyes threw two interceptions. His ball security is an issue.

Defensively the Golden Eagles like to mix their fronts. If the Miami Hurricanes can keep their Heisman hopeful quarterback Tyler Van Dyke clean, he is prime for a big day. The Hurricane offensive line is up for the challenge. They were the highest rated offensive line a week ago according to Pro Football Focus.

The Liberty quarterback carries out a cool RPO and hits a “Van Dime” on the slot fade. Offensive coordinator Josh Gattis can dial it up in similar fashion. There are definitely some mismatches in the slot if he so chooses.

A little Fourplay never hurt anyone. Here is the quick video preview for your leisure. Do we have time for popcorn? I think so. The OBB Legend is the exclusive home for Student of the Game. #BANG!
