Hurricanes Defeat Hawks in Season Opener 83-51

Coral Gables – The Miami Hurricanes women’s hoops squad opened the season with a dominating win over visiting Maryland Eastern Shore 83-51. With head coach Katie Meier serving a three-game suspension to start the season, associate head coach Fitzroy Anthony led the charges.

The Hurricanes spread the ball offensively as they saw four players hit double digits, led by Ja’Leah Williams 14. Highly touted newcomers Haley and Hanna Cavinder added 17 between them. After a basket happy first quarter which totaled 37 total points, the Canes defense put the clamps on MESU in the second quarter, holding them to seven points on 3 of 12 shooting. The Canes went into the break up 43-24.

There was zero chance of a let up in the second half when the Canes came out and shot 52% from the field as they put up a 28-point third quarter. The Canes defense also showed up as they scored 37 points off Hawks turnovers. They also dominated the boards outrebounding the Hawks 52-34 and holding them to 35% shooting for the game.

The Hurricanes are back in action on Thursday when they host Stetson for Elementary School Day. Tipoff is set for 11 a.m. and the game will air on ACC Network Extra.

If you need to put a face to them, think minions with Canes tattoos. Unless thinking that is a copyright violation. In that case just think of them as worker ants. Easily removed with a magnifying glass if they get out of line.
