OBB: The Wake Up (1/17)

Wake up sunshine. This is your Tuesday morning wake up call from your fun loving always positive OBB. The Hurricanes have presumably begun its staff renovation plan. Should we head on over to Greentree? #LETSGO! Wake up!

the Greentree

Ponce de Le-Gone. Miami quarterback coach Frank Ponce is heading back to the mountains to regain his offensive coordinator position. This will be his third stint at Appalachian State. In 2021, Ponce was 22nd among FBS teams in points per game averaging 34.5.

Prior to going to Miami, Ponce was an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach leading the Mountaineer passing game from 2013-18. In that time range he developed two all-time APP State quarterbacks.

Josh Gattis garnered much of the adverse attention this year as the primary play caller but Ponce was not completely absolved. The quarterbacks took a noticeable regression this year including projected first round potential quarterback Tyler Van Dyke.

Is this the catalyst of staff moves? We believe it is. Expect a complete offensive staff overhaul and expect Miami to look much differently in the fall of 2023. As we have maintained, the clock on Gattis’s tenure here is winding down.

“Here we go. I assume that would be the first domino.”

“I think the next OC will coach QBs.”

Recruiting Central

Another wide receiver to keep an eye on is recent transfer portal recipient Dominick Blaylock. The former Georgia Bulldog has 15 catches with 227 yards and one TD to his UGA career credit. But the 6-1 Marietta native has some upside and could shore up some needed depth at receiver.

“That’s one we will want to stick our nose in. ”

“He isn’t the WR1, that’s what they (the staff) think Harrell can be.”

“We are making sure he is fully healthy before giving the green light. Feels like a fucking NFL free agency. Makes sense though when money is on the line now.”

Hard Woodies

(Excerpts from Matty from 3) Miami was able to beat Syracuse at home last night 82-78. The Canes were able to overcome a subpar defensive performance and a rough shooting night from Isaiah Wong in order to win.

Harlond Beverly once again had a great game. Offensively, Beverly played well but he was also very good on defense. Beverly switched onto Joe Girard towards the end of the game and did a pretty good job.

Defensively, Miami has a very rough time sticking with Syracuse big man Jesse Edwards. Edwards was able to score a number of times from diving/rolling to the basket and from grabbing offensive rebounds. Edwards finished with a career high 25 points and 11 rebounds.

Joe Girard also gave Miami a lot of problems on defense. Girard took advantage of a smaller Nijel Pack guarding him by backing him down and scoring in the mid-range. Joe Girard finished the game with 21 points.

Miami plays Duke at Cameron Indoor next Saturday at 12:00 PM ET.

“F–k Syracuse”
