OBB: The Wake Up (01/25)

Wake up sunshine. This is your Wednesday morning wake up call from the unpredictably consistent Orange Bowl Boys. We say farewell officially to Will and we take inventory of all things. Is it time to step on the Greentree? #Letsgo! Wake up!

the Greentree

Will Mallory has officially declared for the NFL draft. According to NFL Draft Buzz, Mallory is listed as the tenth best available tight end in the upcoming NFL draft. The 6-5, 245 pound Mallory had a Senior Bowl invite after his 42 reception, 542 receiving yard, 3 touchdown season.

The fifth-year senior pass catcher participated in 58 games and amassed 2555 snaps as a Hurricane. He played in 10, 13, 11, 12 and 12 games in each of his respected seasons with Miami. Mallory was a composite 4 star recruit out of Jacksonville and played high school at Providence.

SCOUTING REPORT: STRENGTHS

  • Factor in the red zone
  • Good burst off the snap
  • Good vision in the open field
  • Soft hands
  • Has a second gear to accelerate

SCOUTING REPORT: WEAKNESSES

  • Frame limits upside as a blocker
  • Isn’t great on contested catches
  • Let’s ball get into his body instead of using his hands

“Go be great!”

Recruiting Central

Miami is currently hosting Ole Miss safety transfer Tysheem Johnson. He was a True Freshman All-American and a 19 game starter for the Rebels. He was considered one of the more consistent tacklers in the secondary and has quick instincts to shoot gaps.

The 5-10, 195 pound safety entered the portal on January 13th and has amassed 125 tackles in his two collegiate seasons. The Philadelphia native played his high school ball at Neumann Goretti. Johnson is also considered a very formidable slot defender and has two more years of college eligibility left.

The Hurricanes would benefit having another All-American talent in the safety room. Although Kam Kinchens will return, the Hurricanes have lost five safeties this cycle. Brian Balom, Al Blades Jr., Jalen Harrel, Keshawn Washington and Avantae Williams all hit the portal.

“We should know something pretty quickly regarding Tysheem. I don’t know how the coaches are going to do it because the last day for Spring enrollment is what. Wednesday?”

“But this is why Mario wants/needs good to great recruiters on his staff. He can’t do it all himself.”

Hard Woodies

The Miami Hurricanes dismantled its rival on the hard wood. The Hurricanes amassed the largest road win in series history when it defeated FSU 86-63. Also with the win, Jim Larranaga has 112 ACC wins which moves him into the top 10 all-time league wins list.

Nijel Pack and Isaiah Wong both earned player of the game honors with the win. The guard combo mirrored 18 point games and were both 4-7 from behind the arc. Wong was impressive on the boards with 9 rebounds. Pack added five assists and two steals to his impressive stat line.

At one point the Hurricanes led by 28 points and the Noles were down 54-28 at half. The Seminoles are terrible this season and fall to 7-14 overall. The Hurricanes are now 16-4 overall and 7-3 in conference play.

“Does this make up for 45-3?”

“Hell no!”
