OBB: The Wake Up (2/02)

Wake up sunshine. This is your Thursday morning wake up call from your devilishly delightful OBB. The Miami Hurricanes are officially off and running towards 2024 recruits as NSD came and went. A Candle in the wind as the Greentree awaits. #LETSGO! Wake up!

the Greentree

The final 2023 recruiting rankings in the 247 Composite list the Miami Hurricanes #7 overall. The Canes were in the top three until the decommitment of a single recruit. Cormani McClain made it unfortunately official when he signed with the Colorado Buffalos yesterday.

The recruiting class is being touted as the best in Miami Hurricanes history. It ranked best in the state of Florida, best in the ACC, 15 players ranked in the Top 300 composite and 15 players ranked in the ESPN300. Miami however did hold the number one class overall in 2008.

State Recruiting Rankings
  1. Miami Hurricanes #7
  2. Florida Gators #14
  3. FSU Seminoles #20
  4. UCF Knights #49
  5. USF Bulls #73
  6. FAU Owls #79
  7. FIU Panthers #91

“Best Class in history and they’re ranked 7th….that’s crazy.”

“Miami has had higher ranked classes.”

“They might have used overall points.”

Is Mario Cristobal close to announcing a new offensive coordinator? This would be the window of familiarity for the second year Hurricanes head coach. Defensive Coordinator Kevin Steele was hired February 1st and former Offensive Coordinator Josh Gattis was hired February 6th.

Another name that could emerge down the backstretch is current Toledo head coach Jason Candle. Candle, who also is known for a strong South Florida recruiting prowess, led the Rockets to another MAC championship last season. Candle was offered the offensive coordinator position last year.

Candle’s offenses have been a bedrock of efficiency in the MAC and ranked second in conference last year in terms of PPG. (31.3) The Rockets head man has had 5 top 30 scoring offenses in 7 years. Despite the recent contract extension offered to him by new AD Bryan Blair, it apparently does have some wiggle room.

Toledo Rockets Scoring Averages
  • 2022- 31.5 PPG (46th)
  • 2021- 33.4 PPG (27th)
  • 2020- 35.0 PPG (21st)
  • 2019- 27.3 PPG (75th)
  • 2018- 40.4 PPG (9th)
  • 2017- 36.4 PPG (16th)
  • 2016- 38.0 PPG (19th)

“Are you trying to tell us something again Ro?”

“I remember when Woodside torched us in 2017 and everyone wanted Rumph fired.”

“When didn’t someone not want Rumph fired?”

Mike Rumph is currently the director of on-campus recruiting for the Hurricanes. Recently, Rumph had a recruiting pitch that missed the mark. “Who doesn’t want to be in Miami? This ain’t Tuscaloosa where Sundays, Saturdays might be great, but Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, you’re still in Tuscaloosa.”

To make the situation a little more cringe worthy, highly-touted Alabama quarterback commit Julian Sayin was in the building. His reaction and meme worthy smirk were priceless. Although Miami is a world class city and it does in fact offer a plethora of off the field options, Saban doesn’t care.

If there was ever an illustration of tugging on Superman’s cape, it was Rumph grasping at Nick’s cursive A insignia cape. Since 2001, the Miami Hurricanes have won zero national championships while Saban has won seven. Six titles have come via his time in Tuscaloosa.

“Most of everyone in here saw the Rumph recruiting video that leaked right?’

“Ah. That’s why Rumph could never get anyone to commit.”
