OBB: The Wake Up (2/15)

Wake up sunshine. This is your Wednesday morning wake up call from the kids of dynamite, the OBB. The staff is finally starting to assemble and the Greentree awaits. #LETSGO! Wake up!

the Greentree

The Houston Cougar’s Shannon Dawson was named the Miami Hurricanes offensive coordinator. The move came with just 18 days left until the opening of spring practice. Dawson has spent the past four seasons on Dana Holgorsen’s staff and was also with him at West Virginia.

Dawson is a quarterback coach by trade however he was also a tight ends coach during his time at West Virginia. In his three seasons as Houston’s QB coach, the Cougar signal callers combined to throw 87 touchdown passes.

Clayton Tune threw an AAC-record 40 touchdown passes last season for the Coogs. In terms of overall offensive production, Houston averaged 36 points or more per game the past two seasons under Dawson.

Dawson is a proud member of the Air Raid discipleship. Head Coach Mario Cristobal went in a radical 180 direction from last year and his perceived philosophical pound-em-out style has now morphed.

“Hey it’s Dawson’s Creek.”

“As long as he doesn’t go up Sh*ts creek I am fine.”

Look for the SOTG Shannon Dawson edition coming out later today via the OBB Legend. Here is a sneak peak…

Kevin Smith took the Lane train back to Ole Miss. After just one season with the Hurricanes, Smith is now back in SEC country. Smith was the lead recruiter listed for 2023 running backs Mark Fletcher and Christopher Johnson.  Both were Four-Orange Recruits by the OBB composite.

Smith initially followed Kiffen from Florida Atlantic where he was the Owl’s running backs coach from 2017-2019. Smith was the fifth Miami assistant this offseason to leave or be fired.

“Anyone think Kevin Smith leaving is because he got passed over? Like Strong.”

“I was told this two months ago. Don’t expect Steele, Addae, Smith, Ponce, Gattis or Strong to return. So far, most of that has been accurate.”

“I preface that with the fact that I don’t dislike Kevin Smith.”

The Miami Hurricanes have found the expected replacement for Charlie Strong. Cincinnati’s inside linebackers coach Derek Nicholson is expected to be the new linebackers coach. Nicholson is an FSU alumni who spent the previous three seasons at Louisville.

Nicholson was a famous standout linebacker at Florida State and he led the Seminoles in tackles in 2007 and 2008. His Louisville defense led the nation with 50 sacks last year and was third in takeaways.

The new Miami Hurricanes linebacker coach was also responsible for coaching up Momo Sanogo last season. Sanogo’s 89 tackles would have led the Miami Hurricanes last year in that department.

“I like Nicholson!”

“I don’t like the fact he played for FSU.”

“Who cares about that.”
