Men’s Hoops Tops Hokies 76-70
The Hurricane Men continued their quest towards March with a solid road win at Virginia Tech 76-70. This was a lunch pail performance by the Canes, a business trip, if you will. They answered the bell. It marked their 7th straight ACC win which is something they have not done in a decade. It also showed that they are ready for March and all the stress it can bring.
The Hokies jumped out early in this one as they led 17-8 about halfway through the first half. But what happens to great teams when they get punched in the mouth early? They respond and the Canes did just that with a 14-2 run that only took four minutes off the clock. It was that fast…like a viper. Both teams went back and forth with mini runs before they hit the half with the Canes up 36-32.
The Canes came out hot to start the second half, but the Hokies just would not let them pull away. Anytime the Canes seemed to get a little distance the lead would shrink. The Canes went up by 10 with 9 minutes to go after back-to-back threes and were able to keep Virginia Tech at arm’s length the rest of the way, thanks in part to them going 7-of-8 from the line over the final 45 seconds.
Hurricanes now return for a two-game homestand to end the regular season. Saturday at 4 p.m. against Florida State, live on ESPN2 from the Watsco Center and then Pittsburgh.
